Claude and ChatGPT are the two AI assistants most small businesses end up choosing between. Both write well, both read your files, both connect to email and calendars, and both cost about the same for a team. The real differences are in how far each one reaches into your work, what you get on the cheaper plans, and what happens to your data.

This guide compares them for a small service business: a salon, a clinic, a trades company, a small office. Prices are in Canadian dollars as shown on each company’s pricing page from Canada on 17 October 2026.

One disclosure first: Brydge Academy teaches Claude Code, Anthropic’s assistant that works on your own computer. We use both assistants, and we’ve kept this comparison to facts you can check.

The short answer

  • Choose Claude if you want an assistant that works across your tools and files, writes long documents carefully, and (with Claude Code) can carry out multi-step work on your computer, such as reading your booking export, comparing it with your sales and drafting the follow-ups.
  • Choose ChatGPT if you want image generation built in, a very low-cost paid tier for light use, or your team already lives in the ChatGPT app.
  • For a team handling client information, use a business plan on either one. Both say they don’t train on business data by default.

Many businesses end up using both: one as the main assistant, the other for the jobs it does best.

For most small teams the comparison comes down to the two standard team seats, which are within a dollar of each other.

What you get on each plan

On the free plans, both let you chat, search the web, upload files and keep some memory between conversations. Claude’s free plan also includes connectors to your apps, skills, file creation and up to five projects. ChatGPT’s free plan includes limited image creation, voice and deep research.

On the main paid plans (Claude Pro, ChatGPT Plus), both add more usage, projects, scheduled tasks and their coding and work tools. Claude Pro includes Claude Code, Claude in Chrome (the assistant working inside your browser), Research and the Microsoft 365 and Outlook integration. ChatGPT Plus includes expanded deep research, custom GPTs, Codex and ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and mobile.

On the team plans, both add central billing, admin controls and single sign-on, plus connections to the tools your team already uses. ChatGPT Business lists Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub and Microsoft 365. Claude Team lists Microsoft 365, enterprise search across your organization, admin controls for connectors, and Claude Cowork.

Where Claude stands out

  • Working across your tools. Claude connects to email, calendars, drive folders, CRMs and payment tools through connectors. With Claude Code, it can also work with files on your computer, such as a spreadsheet exported from your booking app, and combine them with what it finds in your connected tools.
  • Skills. You can teach Claude a procedure once, such as how you write a quote, your brand voice or your monthly report, and it applies it every time. Our guide to Claude skills explains how.
  • Long, careful documents. Policies, proposals, handbooks and reports where structure and accuracy matter more than speed.
  • Claude Code on the main plan. It’s included from Pro at CA$28 a month, so a single owner can start without a team plan.

Where ChatGPT stands out

  • Images. Image generation is built into every ChatGPT plan, from limited use on Free to unlimited on Pro. If you make a lot of social graphics or product images, that matters.
  • A cheaper paid tier. ChatGPT Go at CA$11 a month gives more messages, uploads and images than the free plan, though it may show ads. Claude has nothing between free and Pro.
  • Familiarity. Many staff already use ChatGPT at home, which makes the first weeks easier.
  • Custom GPTs. Simple assistants you build with instructions and files, shareable inside your workspace.

Privacy and your clients’ data

This is the part most small businesses skip, and the part that matters most if you handle client details.

  • Personal plans (free and individual paid plans). OpenAI’s help centre says the setting “Improve the model for everyone” is on by default for personal accounts; you can switch it off in Settings, under Data controls. On Claude’s Free, Pro and Max plans you choose whether your chats are used to improve Claude, and you can change it in your privacy settings. Anthropic keeps chats used for training for up to five years, and 30 days if you opt out.
  • Business plans. Both say they don’t train on business content by default: ChatGPT Business (“no training on your business data by default”) and Claude Team (“no model training on your content by default”).

The practical rule: if staff will paste in client names, bookings or messages, put them on a business plan, and keep health records, card numbers and passwords out of any AI tool.

How to choose for your business

Ask yourself three questions:

  1. Do you need images every week? If yes, ChatGPT has the edge.
  2. Do you want the assistant to work across your booking system, inbox, sales and files and tell you what to do next? If yes, Claude with Claude Code is built for it.
  3. How many people will use it? One person can start on an individual plan. Two or more handling client information should be on a team plan, which costs about the same on either side.

Then try both on the same real task for a week: answer this week’s enquiries, write next month’s promotion, summarise last month’s sales. Keep the one your team actually reaches for.

Questions

Is Claude better than ChatGPT? Neither is better at everything. Claude is strong at careful writing, documents and working across your tools and files, especially with Claude Code. ChatGPT is strong at images and has a cheaper paid tier.

Is ChatGPT or Claude cheaper for a small team? They’re nearly the same: CA$34 or CA$35 a seat per month on monthly billing, CA$27 or CA$28 billed yearly.

Can I use Claude or ChatGPT with client information? Use a business plan (Claude Team or ChatGPT Business), which neither company trains on by default, and keep health records, card numbers and passwords out of it.

Do I need to know how to code to use Claude Code? No. You describe what you want in plain English. Our Build Your Own AI Assistant program sets it up with your team, connects it to your tools, and teaches the questions and commands that make it useful.

Prices checked on 17 October 2026 on claude.com and chatgpt.com from Canada, before tax.
