Most people meet Claude in a chat window: you ask, it answers, you copy the answer somewhere else. Claude Code works differently. It runs on your computer, opens your files, runs programs and connects to your tools, then does the work and shows you what it changed. It was built for software developers, but business owners use it too, to build their own tools, reports and automations.
This guide explains what Claude Code is, what it costs in Canada, how it differs from Claude’s other tools, and what a business can realistically do with it. Facts are from Anthropic’s own pages, checked on 21 October 2026.
One disclosure first: Brydge Academy teaches Claude Code, and we use it every day to run our own business. It maintains this website, prepares our client reports and dashboards, and produced the video on our home page.
What is Claude Code?
Anthropic calls Claude Code an “agentic” coding tool. In plain terms, it doesn’t just answer: you describe what you want, and it plans the steps, writes and runs the code, and checks its own work as it goes. You still review the result. Three things set it apart from a chat:
- It works on your files. Point it at a folder and it can read every document, spreadsheet or export inside, create new files and edit existing ones.
- It runs things. It can run programs and scripts on your computer, so it can process a 5,000-row export instead of just describing how you might.
- It connects to your tools. Through connectors, built on MCP, an open standard Anthropic created, it can work with any tool that has one. Many CRMs, email and calendar apps and accounting tools now do; check that yours does.
Claude Code asks for permission before it edits your files or runs commands. Since August 2026 it starts in “auto mode” on Pro, Max and Team plans: it carries on with routine steps and is designed to stop on risky ones. You can change how much it asks.
Where it runs
You don’t need to live in a terminal to use it. Claude Code is available:
- in the Claude desktop app (on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans), which is where most non-developers start;
- in a terminal, on macOS, Windows and Linux;
- inside VS Code and JetBrains editors;
- on the web and in the Claude mobile app, for tasks that run in the cloud;
- in Slack, where your team can hand it a task in a channel.
Claude Code, Cowork and chat: which one does what?
There are three ways to work with Claude, and two of them are merging: on 16 September 2026, Anthropic started combining Cowork and chat into one Claude app, on Pro and Max first, with Team and Free plans to follow. The difference between doing office work and building tools stays the same.
| Best for | How it works | |
|---|---|---|
| Chat | Questions, drafts, quick analysis | You ask, Claude answers in the conversation |
| Cowork | Office work: documents, research, files from several apps | You hand over a task; Claude works through the steps in the desktop app and returns finished files |
| Claude Code | Building things: tools, scripts, automations, websites, data jobs | Claude works directly in a folder or software project on your computer, runs programs, and shows you every change it makes |
Anthropic’s own one-liner: Cowork is for delegating to Claude, Code is for building software with Claude. In practice, use Cowork when you want a finished document, and Claude Code when you want something that keeps working after the conversation ends: a script, a dashboard, a small app, an automation.
What businesses use Claude Code for
These are examples of what teams build, not claims from Anthropic:
- Monthly reports from exports. Drop your bookings, sales or ad exports in a folder and have Claude Code build a script that produces the same report every month, with your charts and your format.
- Small internal tools. A quote calculator, a stock checker, a scheduling sheet that flags conflicts, a form that feeds your CRM.
- CRM clean-ups and bulk updates. Connected to your CRM, it can find duplicates, tag contacts and update hundreds of records from plain-language instructions, with you approving the plan first.
- Your website. Update pages, fix broken links, add a pricing table or a new service page, then check the result in a browser before anything goes live.
- Data jobs nobody has time for. Merge three spreadsheets, clean up a messy contact list, rename and sort 2,000 files, pull figures out of a folder of PDFs.
- Routines your team repeats. Turn your weekly review or your client onboarding into a skill or a command, so the whole team runs it the same way (see our guide to Claude skills).
The pattern: work that lives in files, follows clear rules and repeats every week usually makes a good first job for Claude Code. Leave anything involving sensitive client records until you’ve set up the right plan and permissions.
Do you need to know how to code?
No, but it helps to understand a few basics. You describe the result in plain English, and Claude Code writes and runs the code. What makes the difference is knowing how to:
- set up a project folder with the files Claude needs and nothing else;
- write a CLAUDE.md file: a short note Claude reads at the start of every session, with your business context, rules and preferences;
- read the plan Claude proposes before you approve it, and check the result;
- connect a tool safely, with only the access the job needs.
None of this needs a programming background, but it does take practice. If your work is mostly documents and email, start with Cowork and come to Claude Code when you want to build something that lasts.
What Claude Code costs in Canada
Claude Code isn’t on the free plan. It’s included in every paid plan:
| Plan | Price (viewed from Canada) | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Pro | CA$28/month, or CA$23/month billed yearly | One person trying it, a few sessions a week |
| Max | From CA$140/month | Daily, heavy use |
| Team (standard seat) | CA$35/seat monthly, or CA$28/seat billed yearly (2 to 150 people) | Teams that want shared billing, admin controls and data protection |
| Team (premium seat) | CA$175/seat monthly, or CA$140/seat billed yearly | Team members who use it all day |
| Enterprise | US$20/seat plus usage, 20 seats minimum | Larger organizations |
Canadian prices were checked on claude.com/pricing from Canada on 17 October 2026 and exclude tax; the Enterprise price is Anthropic’s U.S.-dollar list price. Every plan has usage limits. Both Team seat types include Claude Code and Cowork. Developers can also pay per use through Anthropic’s developer platform (the API) instead of a plan.
For most small businesses the choice is simple: Pro for the owner to try it, Team as soon as staff use it with client information.
Is it safe for business data?
In the desktop app, a terminal or an editor, Claude Code runs on your own computer and talks directly to Anthropic’s models, without a separate server or a remote index of your files. Sessions you start on the web or in the mobile app run in Anthropic’s cloud instead. Either way, what Claude reads goes to Anthropic’s models, so your plan’s privacy rules apply. Three things to know:
- Training on your data. On Team and Enterprise plans, Anthropic doesn’t train its models on your content by default. On Pro and Max you choose in your privacy settings whether your chats are used to improve Claude.
- Permissions. It asks before risky actions, and you decide how much it can do alone. Start new projects in a copy of your files, not the originals.
- Keys and passwords. Never put passwords, API keys or client records in a file Claude reads as instructions. Let connectors handle access to your tools, and give each connector only the access the job needs.
What about Claude for Small Business?
On 13 May 2026, Anthropic launched Claude for Small Business: 15 ready-made workflows and 15 skills (payroll planning, month-end close, invoice chasing, lead triage, campaign planning and more) with connectors to QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Canva, Docusign, Google Workspace and Microsoft 365. You turn it on inside Cowork, and Claude asks for your approval before anything sends, posts or pays. Anthropic recommends Pro for one person and Team for a business with more than one.
It’s a good way to see what an AI assistant can do inside the tools you already use. The launch was aimed at U.S. businesses, so check that each connector works with your Canadian accounts before you rely on it. And it runs in Cowork, not Claude Code: when the ready-made workflows don’t fit how your business works, Claude Code is how you build your own.
How to get started
- Pick one job. Something you do every week, with files you already have: the monthly report, the quote, the CRM clean-up.
- Choose a plan (see the prices above).
- Install the Claude desktop app and open Claude Code on a new project folder with copies of the files for that job.
- Write a short CLAUDE.md with who you are, what the business does and the rules for the job.
- Ask for a plan first, read it, then let Claude build. Check the result against the way you’d do it by hand.
- Connect one tool once the first job works, then turn the routine into a skill so it runs the same way every time.

Questions
Is Claude Code free? No. It’s included in Claude’s paid plans (Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise), and developers can pay per use instead. The free plan doesn’t include it.
Can a non-developer use Claude Code? Yes. You give instructions in plain English and Claude writes and runs the code. The Claude desktop app means you don’t need a terminal. Knowing how to organize a project folder and check Claude’s plan makes a big difference.
What’s the difference between Claude Code and Cowork? Both are built on the same technology. Cowork is built for office work and returns finished documents and files. Claude Code works directly in a folder or codebase and runs programs, so it’s the one to use when you want to build a tool, a script or an automation.
Does Claude Code work on Windows? Yes. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, in the desktop app, a terminal or an editor such as VS Code.
Learn it with your team
Claude Code is at the heart of Build Your Own AI Assistant: in one session at your location, your team sets up Claude Code, connects it to the tools you already use and turns your routines into skills and commands. We also use it in AI-Assisted CRM Operations and Create an App with AI. We train teams across Canada, and for eligible B.C. employers the Employer Training Grant can pay back up to 80% of the cost (grant rules and limits apply).
